"Do you know when you'll be speaking to Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There is only one problem: I also wants to be Haim's additional sibling. What's more, we are not alone. A host of high-profile supporters have also begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy Award nominees.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals often feature them marching in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such boundless exuberance you inevitably think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Award Milestone

The band have called into their homes, where they're taking a pause after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been in the running for a top rock honor at the Grammys – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major milestone," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I love summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Humor

The trio's candor inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Path

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

But Haim will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "There is nothing else that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
