Lando Norris edged out team-mate and championship contender Oscar Piastri for the fastest time in the closing stages of the practice session at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Norris, who took the title advantage from his teammate by one point after winning in the Mexican Grand Prix recently, outpaced the Australian by a tiny margin of 0.023secs. Before then, Piastri had been the leading McLaren for most of the session before the sprint shootout set to begin at 6:30 PM GMT. Max Verstappen, the only other driver in realistic title contention, lying 36 points Norris, was classified in 17th position as his team ran a unique setup. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the only driver to go off, if briefly, when he lost control at the fourth corner soon after starting. Tsunoda spun out over the curbs on exit before sliding over the run-off area, and was blessed to escape with just a slight brush of the fence. The Ferrari of Lewis Hamilton also lost it, at the final moments of the session, spinning around through the high-speed Mergulho turn leading to the last turn on to the main straight. Hamilton ended the session in P19, just behind teammate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the rest of the field, with Nico Hulkenberg's Sauber in third, over half a second off Piastri's best. The Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with Sauber's Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of Russell and Alpine's Gasly and the Williams of Carlos Sainz.
