World Health Organization Sounds Concern Over Acute Scarcity of Weight-Loss Injections

Under a tenth of patients that would benefit from weight-loss injections such as Wegovy can access them, warns the WHO as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

With in excess of 1,000,000,000 people worldwide now living with obesity, it is urging increased and just availability to these injectable treatments.

Based on forecasts, over two billion will be obese by 2030 without intervention.

"Our latest guidelines affirms that obesity is a lifelong illness that can be treated with comprehensive and continuous care," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are key hurdles to universal access to the treatments that can aid individuals in losing substantial weight, says the organization.

Despite the current most optimistic case, the production of these medications could only cover approximately 100 million people – fewer than 10% of eligible patients, per the WHO.

The recommendation urges governments and firms to increase access, through strategies including patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on the active ingredient – the primary component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in a number of nations in 2026.

The Way Weight-Loss Jabs Function

These medications mimick a body's own hormone to reduce digestion speed, reduce hunger and boost satiety so users eat less.

People commonly start to lose weight after several weeks of commencing the weekly injections.

Evidence points to users may regain a significant portion a year later of stopping the drug, as their typical appetite resume.

To be carrying excess weight raises your risk for experiencing diseases, including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and specific malignancies.

Obesity affects people in countries worldwide and was associated with over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
